What is a Rain Chain?

Rain chains are a beautiful alternative to downspouts

Originating in Japan hundreds of years ago, rain chains beautifully move rainwater from gutters to drains or decorative water receptacles, turning a relatively unglamorous activity into a compelling, attractive water feature.

While most homeowners go to great lengths to camouflage unsightly gutters, rain chains have been carefully designed to add character and charm to your outdoor space. You can find a rain chain in just about any color and every theme, although the copper-colored variety are definitely the most popular.

Rain Chains are some of our favorite ways to handle stormwater runoff on our Gasper-built pavilions and roofs. We often anchor them in a large frost-resistant piece of pottery filled with river jack stone. Beneath our rain chains, we use a drain fixture to pipe the stormwater away from the structure and patio.

Rain chains are a decorative, functional alternative to downspouts. They beautifully move rainwater from gutters to drains or decorative water receptacles, turning a relatively unglamorous activity into a compelling, attractive water feature.
